Critical Thinking

Ryan-
After being a student at UCF for the past 4 years I have come to the conclusion that Critical Thinking is extremely important. As we already know Interdisciplinary studies is a combination of 3 different areas. When you are studying more then one area at a time it can get tough but if you think critically and manage your time it shouldnt be a problem. Over these past couple years my critical thinking skills have definitely approved alot. I am using these skills in many different situations that I come across to at any given time. In my future I believe that having these Critical thinking skills will really help me in choosing a good career and being successful in life. I enjoy being an interdisciplinary studies major and feel like it has helped me out allot in accomplishing these skills.

Kaitlyn-

Not only does critical thinking relate to interdisciplinarity--it is a requirement! I think IDS majors are a certain breed of students. They are the ones that realize that the world is not as cut-and-dry as college would lead you to believe. That being said, I believe critical thinking is right at the core.

In my mind, critical thinking means being able to follow a logical transgression, and being able to realize underlying implications that may not be apparent at first glance. For example: social attitude toward economic policy is changing, but WHY is this adaptation taking place? Individuals must be able to observe, analyze, and integrate. These are the skills that will make you an asset to society, and it seems to me like IDS graduates will have the upper-hand. Not only has the interconnected structure of our degree program forced us to develop such critical thinking attributes; our Cornerstone and Capstone classes have taught us to acknowldge and develop these skills.

  1. Critical thinking is cirtanly somthing that has proven to be one of the more useful tools I have consistantly used throughout my time here. It seems that everyday we need to make informed disisions based on many diffrent aspects of life, ranging from finances, to business dissions. The beauty of criticall thinking, is it enables you to examine the problem more deeply and acomplish the task in a far more productive way. Same goes for an idea one might be examining in a research paper for example. At the end of the day, this extemely important skill has great use not just within the classroom, but has a very great pressence outside also.

  2. It is very important to use critical thinking in all areas of life. Being an Interdisciplinary Major requires us to think and understand each area of our major and how they relate to each other.
The virtual philosopher scored my answers as both consistent and inconsistent. I believe that my critical thinking and reasoning is consistent. I think some of the questions asked by the virtual philosopher really depend on the situation or the friend.
When it explained to me why one of my answers was inconsistent, it helped me to understand how I could have solved that particular problem.

  3. Hello to all,

I can honestly say I never thought I used Critical Thinking in my daily life but I guess I do. I just took the Virtual Philosopher and found out that I was consistent 2 out 3 situations. Ryan and Kaitlyn have you participated in the following link:
    http://web.uncg.edu/dcl/courses/vicecrime/vp/vp.html

There were 3 situations that judge you on your ethic's and critical thinking and see if they are consistent with one another. I was consistent with my situation 2 and 3 but not with situation 1: "a friends dilemma". I said in my ethical question that sometimes it is ok to lie and then in that situation I said I wouldn't lie to my friend. It depends on the circumstances in my opinion.

As far as realizing and applying critical thinking I hope to learn the skills I have and enhance on them. I know I have the ability for putting to use great critical thinking and I am going to try to acknowledge and use my skills more.

  4. Nicole...
I too had the same answer when it came to situation 1: "a friends dilemma." You're right, it does depend on the circumstance. I think we're great critical thinkers! :D

  6. Hey Ryan,

I was curious what field area you are going to target for a career once you graduate? Have you used the e-portfolio yet for a reference to possible employers? Can you yet or is that only when you finally graduate? Ok last question I was curious have you done any internships? I want to do a internship but I don't know when to fit it in my course schedule. Is it best to do them over the summer? Sorry for the questions I just felt hey why not ask you have been where I am now I am sure.

    Thanks for your time!

  7. Nicole.. Thanks for asking those questions. I've been wondering the same things! I also wonder, will we have to do the same mentoring website as well when we take our next IDS class?

  8. So, kind of off topic but I just wanted to say I think our major is awesome. I've heard and had coversations with a lot of people who think our major is basic or for people who screwed up in the beginning of college... A lot of different things. However, I feel like we have one up on people because we're gaining knowledge in three different areas! I was explaining my major to this person at work yesterday and he acted as though the IDS major was a joke, I definitely prove him wrong! It was interesting when he told me he was a history major and didn't know what he wanted to do. Just thought I'd let you all know :D

  9. Nicole and kelly,

Cirtanly in accord with you. You cirtanly need criticall thinking in all walks of life and sometimes in the most bizzar circumstances also.

Take for example the need to critically think over spending. Or a haloween costume.

    the list goes on.

  10. Critical thinking is one of the most important techniques that not only IDS majors have to take advantage of. The everyday business man or woman also has to utilize critical thinking in order to be successful. I have seen my advancement in this area because when I first declared the IDS program as my major I thought I could treat every class the same. But I found it very difficult to understand all the material so I had to adapt and take different paths to get the work done. Being able to think critically is definitely a huge advantage in the work force today because it shows you're able to adjust the way you think and get the job done.
