Ryan-
As I was growing up as a kid I always wanted to do something in the golf industry. I love the game of golf and I enjoy being on a golf course. When I was in high school I worked at a golf course in Miami for 2 years. I did a great job and met allot of people. A few years after I moved to Orlando for college here at UCF. Going to school full time as well as having a job can get a bit rough but I always figured out a way to manage my time and be successful. I currently work at the Ritz Carlton Golf Club here in orlando Florida. I am a golf Caddie which means I help golfers out with anything they might need.
My strongest skill that I have use are my communication skills. I am very good at talking to people especially at work. I see new people everyday I go into work and I get to communicate with these people throughout the day. My weakest skills I would say are being organized. Over the years I have really realized how important it is to be organized and it has really got me to start trying harder. Life would be so much easier for everyone if they were organized at all times.
To improve on my weak skills I can think to myself at all times how important it is to have these skills that I am missing. I let myself know how much more successful I can be if I practice these skills. Ny me telling this to myself I work harder at them and eventually these skills will improve. With everything that you do in life practice makes perfect.
Identify two professional clubs or organizations that are useful to your chosen career.
Deca and AD PR are 2 clubs that can really be beneficial to my career. DECA is a organization that help students with business. We use to go on trips with other students and do campaigns and compete with other students from all over the world. Ad PR is great for people like myself headed into the Advertising field . It really helps you out in which it gives you information about selling Ads and working with others.

I'm hoping my professional life will take off sometime in the near future. As of yet, it's taken a lot longer than I'd expected and hoped for.
I feel like I've been obsessed with doing so for, oh, the past two or three years. When I was a sophomore I began looking for experience with what I was studying: Statistics. I went to Experiential Learning, talked to professors for ideas, and scoured the area for statistical consulting firms. In fact, my inability to find any type of internship is what convinced me to join IDS. My thinking was that another incorporated field of study would get me into an industry where I could at least apply quantitative analysis.
So I adopted an area of Environmental Studies. I began volunteering a nature preserve, which was not only fun but it also got me energized for my new focus. I went on interviews with nonprofits and the Florida Department of Environmental Protection. Thankfully, I didn't wait too long this time to decide that this path wasn't for me. Any capacity I was able to discover didn't involve much more than filling out paperwork, with little opportunity for the career-long success I was craving. So once again, I changed.
This last time I decided on Business. At least it would open up plenty more job opportunities, right? Sadly, I was wrong again. I have sent out what feels like a million resumes and have got countless "You sound great! But we're actually down-sizing" 's. Now I'm graduating and it seems like I've run out of time. So with a great void of professional experience, I'd have to say my strongest job skill is persistence.
If this sounds pretty depressing, I apologize. But honestly, this has been consuming my life recently, and it feels good to get a chance to vent. My question for you? Please, someone tell me their story of professional development and assure me that there's hope!!! :)

There are many things I hope to accomplish in my professional life. I have been working for Walt Disney World and Universal Orlando for over three years now. Although I work in the entertainment industry for both, I hope to further my professional career in one of these two major companies.
ReplyDeleteThrough two of my areas, commerce and communication, I have learned how to incorporate them within my career right now. These companies are so large that communication is key in every area. I have also learned a lot about the marketing industry. I would definitely enjoy working within marketing or advertising for either theme park.
I wish I could say my professional history is more than what it is! However, I decided that staying within the theme parks will help me in the future. I would like to take advantage of the internship opportunities that they provide. This would be helpful so that I can learn more about the subjects I enjoy and the careers that go along with them. College has taught me that interning is the best thing a student can do. I've changed my major so many times that I know it's definitely a good idea to have some experience in different fields.
Communication is one of my strong points. I have learned from all of my classes that it is crucial to have effective communication. Another strong point of mine is that I'm a very positive person! I try to stay optimistic and encouraging, especially in difficult situations. I know that one of my weak points is procrastination. I'm hoping that when my professional career begins I lose this tendency. I can improve in this area by becoming and staying more organized. There are times when I'm extremely organized and then I fall behind somehow.
I am currently not apart of any clubs or organizations. I work 60 hours a week plus attend school full time. However, I realized that even if I can't participate it is beneficial to be aware of things like this. I found that there is the American Advertising Federation and also the American Marketing Association of Central Florida. I think these will be very helpful to my career.
I plan on completing an internship in Spring or Summer of 2010. I know that any internship means that I am receiving experience and that it will help me decide which careers I enjoy and do not enjoy. I'm excited to start working in the different areas I've been studying this year.
Kaitlyn..
ReplyDeleteDon't give up! It seems like you've had a lot of experience in different areas...more than what I can say.
I know a lot of my friends who graduated last year and this year from FSU have had a very rough time finding a job...but eventually something comes up! There's a job out there waiting for you!
Hey Ryan!
ReplyDeleteI also grew up playing golf.. here in Orlando at Bay Hill. I also played in high school. Not so much anymore because I'm so busy :(
I'm glad the weather is getting cooler though, definitely perfect for golf!
:D
Thanks Kelly! I know it's a hard time for everyone... I'll be excited to tell you guys once something finally works itself out :)
ReplyDeleteTo be honest, I have not been an interdisciplinary stundent long enough for me to have had any proffesional expericence in the feild yet. Though as this semester goes on, I countiunally find that I am usuing my interdicipinarity withing aspects of my studies as well as problems within organizations that i am involved with. It seems that the longer I spend in this major the more it is helping me with problems. I am sure that as I continue within this area of study that I will obtain more knowledge of how to use my interdisciplinarity throughout my proffesional and personal career.
ReplyDeleteSo far, the only place where I have worked has been for the Orientation team at the University. This I suppose relates back to interdiciplinary proffesionalism in a way due to the fact I had to use diffrent areas of my knowledge and leadership skills throughout the diffrent times of the day during an orientation. Other than that, I have not had enough experience to explain.
I honestly have never writtern a Cover letter, So I honestly have no Idea where to even begin with that.
My resume has been a work in progress for years! The first one I ever wrote was in the 8th grade and to be honest, its been the one I have been using ever since! The template has remained the same just information has changed. The great thing with a resume is you can change it and adapt it that easily. My current resume contains current awards, my GPA, College of atendence as well as Prior awards from the UK. I also have my prior experice of O-team as well as the various organizations that I am affiliated with.
The best place I have found thus far has been at the office of Experiencail Learning. In that office you will find a wealth of all diffrent Resources. It is an awesome place for anything from aplications, to resumes and more! Check out there office in Ferral Common.

ReplyDeleteKeep up that awesome career withing those two companies! It seems that you are picking up some valuable experience just by working for them. Keep finding new ways to increase your knowledge of marketing and Advertising because it is a great industry to get into!
Kaitlyn-
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately a lot of the reason for Companies not giving any opportunity to work within the field is just because of the current economic situation. If you keep motivated and keep looking, though it may seem difficult, I am sure you will be able to make ends meet and find exactly what you are looking for. Even try thinking outside the box a little bit, look at things with an open mind and try something you haven't.
Hey Guys! So sorry I haven't been envolved in the blog until now. I was diagnosed with Acute Bronchitis & Flu A Thursday! I still have a serious cough and hard to breathe. I hope this goes away soon!
ReplyDeleteWell regarding my professional history in the job field I have worked since I was old enough to drive. I have been a nanny for two different families, secretary for a design firm, marketing assistant director for a brokerage firm, and currently a flight attendant. I also do some promotion work on the side for extra cash here and there.
Through-out my different paths of experiences I would have to say communication has always been my strong job skill. This one skill has always been consistant in everything I choose to do. From answering phone calls, to understanding and taking care of children, and developing a marketing plan, communication is always involved.
My weakness would have to be that I can't stay still. The reason I left pretty much each of my previous jobs was because I was bored! I got in a routine 9-5 for years and I couldn't stand it!
This is one reason why I have chosen to go back to school. To finally recieve my degree and find a career that I love and wont get bored with, so I hope.
While I am a flight attendant my schedule is a little bit more flexible then most jobs. I fly on the weekends (friday - monday)about 4 times a month. If I am able I will try to trade or drop a trip where I could even just fly once a month. This gives me great opportunity to be able to take off during the summer to do a possible internship. I want to do many and in a variety of locations outside the state of florida.
With my flight benefits I would be able to transport myself @ a very low cost.
Does anyone have any suggestions on internships around Orlando or other locations outside of Orlando?
Well Kaitlyn growing up I never really had a steady job. The reason I never had a job was because I started to to play football from the age of 9 until now. When I was in high school my dad told me as long as I played football went to school and got accepted into a good college I didn't have to work.
ReplyDeleteWhen I go accepted into UCF on a full scholarship my dad had no problem with me not working through high school. When I got here I thought it would be good for me to get a job just so I could understand the responsibilities that it takes. But with all the football practices and long meetings then throw class on top of that I didn't have time for a job.
This past summer was the first time I decided to get a job. Because I was so big I decided to put it to good use besides banging into my teammates everyday, so I took a bouncing job at a local club and it was a great experience for me. My strength was my communication with people, I knew how to talk to the other staff and I knew how to talk to the people coming into the club.
My weakness was my experience, I didn't exactly know how to go about doing some easy things but after a couple weeks it was like I had been working for years. Im sorry but I really don't have any advice to give you Kaitlyn except keep trying and there will be a job that comes along.
I am not currently apart of any professional clubs or organizations just because I have so much time occupied by the football season right now. When I graduate I am looking forward to an internship with a professional or collegiate football team. Right now I like to think that my club is the football team. They're pretty much like a family to me and we all learn from each others mistakes.
